When to go
Victoria Falls is not one waterfall. It is two, and which one you get depends entirely on the month. In full flood the curtain runs the whole 1,700 metres and hides itself in its own spray. In low water long sections of the lip run dry and the black basalt face appears. Both are worth flying over. They are not the same sight.
Quick answer
June to August is the best balance and the peak season. Plenty of water still coming over, far less spray in the way, cool dry air and the sharpest light of the year. February to May is maximum water and maximum spray — which is exactly when the flight is worth most, because the walking viewpoints see almost nothing. September to December is low water: less curtain, far more structure, and the only months Devil’s Pool opens.
The year, month by month
Fares barely move across the year here. What moves is the river, and it moves enormously.
Feb – May
The curtain runs end to end and the spray climbs high enough to be seen from far outside town. On foot you stand in a permanent downpour and see very little; from the air you are above it. This is the month range where the helicopter earns its money most obviously.
Jun – Aug
Plenty of water, much less spray, cool dry air and long clear light. If you want one window for photographs this is it — which is also why it is the busiest and why the flight with transfers fills first.
Sep & Oct
The flow drops and sections of the lip run dry, exposing the basalt face and the gorge floor. Less water, far more structure. This is also when Devil’s Pool on the Zambian side opens.
Nov – Jan
The rains return and the river climbs back through these months. Hot, green, and the fewest visitors of the year, with the water somewhere between the two extremes.
The spray, and why it is the whole argument
In flood the spray hides the falls from the ground. The flight is above it.
When the Zambezi is in flood, the water hitting the bottom of a gorge that narrow throws an enormous column of spray straight back up. It rises high enough to be seen from a long way outside town, and it is where the local name comes from: Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders.
From the walking viewpoints in those months you are standing inside that spray. You will be soaked within a minute, your lens will be useless, and the falls you came to photograph will be a white wall of water vapour. Raincoats are sold at the gate for exactly this reason, and they do not help you see anything.
From a helicopter you are above it. The spray becomes the subject rather than the obstacle, the curtain is visible along its whole length, and the rainbow it throws sits below you rather than in your eyes. In high water the flight is not a nicer way to see the falls. Some days it is the only way.
The best time of day, in order
Light and air change more across a day here than they do across a month.
Calm air, the sun behind you rather than in the lens, and the spray has not yet built to its afternoon height. Every photographer at the falls says the same thing.
Warm low light on the basalt and the gorge walls, and a good chance of a rainbow in the spray if the sun is behind the helicopter.
Harsh overhead light, the gorge in deep shadow, and the least flattering hour for photographs. Perfectly fine if it is the only slot you can get.
In the wet months the air behind a passing storm is the clearest it gets, and the light is dramatic. Worth rebooking for if the operator offers.

Rarely. Wind and thunderstorms are the reasons when it happens, mostly in the wet months. Operators refund or rebook.
Barely. What changes is availability — the June to August peak fills first, and the flight with transfers goes before the others.
Booking around the water
Fly early. It matters more than the month.
Book a morning slot, whatever the month. The air over the gorge is calmest at the start of the day, the sun is behind the helicopter rather than in the lens, and the spray has not yet built to its afternoon height. Every photographer who has done a Victoria Falls helicopter ride says the same thing about the first slot.
Do not chase the month, chase the morning. The difference between a good and a bad Victoria Falls helicopter ride is more often the hour than the season. February in the early light beats August at noon.
What actually stops a flight
Cancellations are rare here. These are the reasons when it happens.
The wet months bring afternoon storms. A morning Victoria Falls helicopter ride is almost never affected; an afternoon one occasionally is.
Uncommon, and the pilot decides on the day rather than the night before.
If the aircraft cannot be balanced with the passengers booked, someone moves to the next rotation. This is what the weigh-in is for.
