Victoria Falls helicopter ride: booking, transfers and the weigh-in

Three things decide how the morning goes, and none of them is the flight: which side of the river you lift off from, whether the transfer is inside the fare, and what you weigh. The last one surprises people every single day.

A helicopter on the helipad outside Victoria Falls before a scenic flight

Quick answer

Book a few days ahead, confirm whether the transfer is included, and expect to be weighed at check-in. Every Victoria Falls helicopter ride here includes a public weigh-in, a photo-ID check and a safety briefing. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure applies to most listings on this page. A park levy is sometimes collected separately, in cash.

The weigh-in

Why it happens and what it decides

Everybody is weighed. It decides the seat, not just the balance.

Small helicopters are loaded for balance, not for preference. The pilot needs real numbers to work out where each passenger sits and how much fuel to carry, so everybody steps on a scale at check-in, in front of the desk. It is quick, it is universal here, and it is not something you can opt out of.

It decides your seat. That is the part worth knowing, because on a flight over one curtain of water the side you are on matters more than it would almost anywhere else. Most operators fly two circuits in opposite directions for exactly this reason, so the inside row gets its turn — but the window row gets both.

Some operators apply a threshold. Above a certain weight a second seat may be required. The figure varies, it is rarely printed on the listing, and it is worth asking before you book rather than discovering it at the scale.

What happens at check-in

Six steps, in order

Nothing here is unusual. All of it surprises people who have not flown in a small helicopter.

  • Photo ID

Matched to the booking name. Bring it even though this is a sightseeing flight.

  • The weigh-in

On a scale, in front of the counter. The pilot needs real numbers to balance the aircraft.

  • The levy, if it is not in your fare

Usually cash, usually small. Ask when you book so you are not hunting for notes.

  • Seat assignment

Decided by weight rather than by who asked first — though asking politely for a window at this moment is how people get one.

  • The briefing

Headsets, seatbelts, doors and exits. Five to ten minutes.

  • Walking out

Ducking, escorted, from the side and never from behind. Follow the marshaller exactly.

What sells out, and when

Three patterns worth planning around

The dry-season peak, the transfer fare, and the pool.

June to August, always. This is the peak: plenty of water, far less spray, cool dry air. It is the best flying of the year and everybody knows it.

The flight with transfers. It is the volume listing on this page and the first to fill, because it removes the two taxi rides.

Devil’s Pool listings, in low water. The pool opens only when the river drops, roughly September to December, and the slots are limited by how many people the island can take at once.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure applies to most listings here.

When to fly

Common questions

Booking, answered

How far in advance should I book a Victoria Falls helicopter ride?

A few days is usually enough. Make it a week between June and August, which is the peak, and longer if you want a Devil’s Pool listing in the low-water months.

Will I be weighed?

Yes, at check-in, on a scale, in public. Every operator here does it. It decides load balance and it decides your seat.

Is the transfer to the helipad included?

On some listings. Our top pick at $180 includes hotel pickup both ways; several cheaper fares do not, and a taxi at each end closes most of the price gap.

Is there a park levy?

Sometimes. Some fares include it and some collect it in cash at the helipad. It is small, and it is the surprise people mention most often.

Can children fly?

Yes on most listings, and they occupy a full paid seat because the aircraft is balanced by weight. Minimum ages vary by operator.

How do I get a window seat?

Ask at check-in and check in early. It is assigned on weight and balance first and on who asked second, so both matter.

Can I cancel?

Most listings on this page offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. If the operator cancels for weather you are refunded or rebooked.

Reading a listing properly

Four lines that decide what you are buying

Country, transfer, levy, cancellation window.

Which side it lifts off from. Sometimes it is small print rather than a heading. Every Victoria Falls helicopter ride on this page names its country, and that name is the difference between a ten-minute transfer and a border crossing.

Whether the transfer is included. Our top pick includes hotel pickup both ways. Several cheaper fares do not, and two taxis close most of the gap.

The levy. Included on some listings, collected in cash at the helipad on others.

The cancellation window. Usually 24 hours on a Victoria Falls helicopter ride, occasionally 48 on the long combination days.

What to bring, and what to leave

Six items

The cabin is small and the rules exist because things have blown out of it.

  • Photo ID

In the booking name. Required at check-in on every Victoria Falls helicopter ride here.

  • Some cash

For the levy, if your fare does not include it.

  • A phone with a wrist strap

Allowed and encouraged. Loose in the hand is how they get dropped.

  • Sunglasses

The glare off the river above the falls is considerable.

  • No hats or scarves

Anything that can leave your head goes in a locker before you walk out.

  • No large bags

Weight and balance. Take a pocket, not a rucksack.
