Twelve minutes for $173 is a lot of money per minute, and it is over quickly. Whether it is worth it comes down to one question: is there something here you cannot see any other way? At Victoria Falls, unusually, the answer is a clear yes — and it is a matter of geometry rather than opinion.
Quick answer
Yes, and the reason is the shape of the place. The falls drop into a fracture that runs across the river, so every viewpoint on foot stands on the opposite wall of that fracture looking sideways. The whole 1,700-metre curtain in one view does not exist from anywhere you can walk to. Add the fact that in high water the spray hides the falls from the ground entirely, and $180 for twelve to twenty-five minutes earns its money. There are two cases where it does not.
The case for
The geometry, the spray, and a strong review record.
The whole curtain does not exist from the ground. This is not marketing. The falls pour into a crack that runs across the river, and the only land close enough to see them is the far wall of that same crack. You walk along it looking sideways, through trees, at sections. All 1,700 metres in one frame is available from about three hundred metres up and nowhere else.
In high water, the ground sees almost nothing. February to May the spray is heavy enough that the viewpoints are a permanent downpour and the falls are a white wall of vapour. People arrive in April, walk the paths, get soaked, photograph nothing and leave disappointed. The helicopter is above all of it.
The evidence is unusually concentrated. 1,114 reviews across this page, weighted 4.73, and the flight we recommend carries 603 of them at 4.8. That is a better record than most things people spend $180 on anywhere.
Two cases where we would not book it
The flights are good. They are not right for everyone, and the reviews will not tell you this.
In February to May the spray builds through the day and afternoon cloud is common. A morning slot is fine; an afternoon one in those months is the one booking we would move rather than accept.
For $180 you could walk both sides of the falls, cross the bridge and take a sunset cruise, and the viewpoints themselves cost only the park fee. The flight is the thing that cannot be substituted — but if the budget is genuinely one thing, we would not insist the one thing has to be this.

The scale delivers, the pilots carry it, and the waiting is the complaint.
The scale lands. Almost every five-star review says some version of the same thing: you do not understand how big it is until you see the whole of it at once. That is the product, and it delivers.
The pilots carry it. Across the rated listings here the pilot is named more often than the aircraft, the price or the view. On a twelve-minute flight run six times a day, that is the variable that moves the rating.
The complaints are about the ground time. Not the flying — the waiting. Check-in, the weigh-in, a rotation running late, and a taxi at either end if the transfer was not included. Nobody who flew was disappointed by the flight. Plenty were surprised by the morning it consumed, which is the strongest argument for the fare that includes transfers.

A day safari, about the same. Wildlife along the Zambezi for a whole day against twelve minutes in the air. If you have a week, do both. If you have two days, a Victoria Falls helicopter ride is the one that cannot be substituted, because everything else on this list is reachable on foot or by road.
