Devil’s Pool

Devil’s Pool, Victoria Falls: the months it opens and the flight that includes it

There is a rock basin on the very lip of Victoria Falls that you can sit in, with the whole river going over the edge beside you. It is real, it is reached from the Zambian side, and it is open only for part of the year — because for the rest of it the river is far too high.

Devil’s Pool on the lip of Victoria Falls

Quick answer

Devil’s Pool sits on the edge of the falls on the Zambian side, reached from Livingstone Island, and it opens only when the Zambezi is low — roughly September to December. One listing here combines it with a helicopter flight, at $702. In high water the pool is closed and no operator will take you, whatever the date on your booking says.

Why it only works some months

A natural rock lip, and a river that swings tenfold

The rock lip only holds when the river is low. September is the overlap.

At the edge of the falls, on the Zambian side, there is a lip of rock that stands slightly proud of the drop. When the river is low enough, the water flowing over it is shallow and the rock holds back the pool behind it. That pool is Devil’s Pool, and people sit in it.

When the Zambezi rises, the same lip disappears under a great deal of fast water and there is nothing holding anything back. That is why the pool has a season at all, and why no operator will run it outside that season regardless of what you have booked.

Which means the pool and the best flying months do not overlap. June to August is the best balance for the flight; September to December is when the pool opens. If you want both on the same trip, aim for September, when the water has dropped enough for the pool and there is still plenty coming over the main curtain.

What the combination day involves

Five stages

Three hours, and only a few minutes of it is the helicopter.

  • The flight

The usual short circuit over the whole curtain and the first gorge, from the Zambian side.

  • The boat to Livingstone Island

Out onto the river above the falls, which is flat and calm until it is not.

  • The walk across

Shallow water and rock, with guides, to the edge itself.

  • The pool

You sit in a rock basin on the lip with the river going over beside you. Guides hold you; this is not an unsupervised swim.

  • Back

The same way, and usually a meal on the island depending on the listing.

Common questions

Devil’s Pool, answered

When is Devil’s Pool open, and can I add a Victoria Falls helicopter ride?

Roughly September to December, when the Zambezi is low enough for the natural rock lip to hold the pool. In high water it is closed, and no operator will run it.

Is Devil’s Pool reachable from a Victoria Falls helicopter ride in Zimbabwe?

Zambia. It is reached from Livingstone Island, above the falls on the Zambian side. No Zimbabwean listing includes it without crossing the border.

Can I combine it with a helicopter flight?

Yes — one listing here does exactly that, at $702, over about three hours. It is the most expensive listing on this page.

Is Devil’s Pool safe?

It is run with guides who hold you, on a natural rock lip, and only in the months the river allows. It is still moving water on the edge of a waterfall, and you need to be able to swim.

Is there a minimum age for Devil’s Pool?

Yes, and it varies by operator. Check the listing before booking for a family.

What if the water is too high when I arrive for my Victoria Falls helicopter ride?

The operator cancels the pool portion and refunds or rebooks. This is the main reason to check the month before you book rather than after.

Planning a trip around the pool

The pool has a season and the falls have a different one

September is the overlap. Everything else is a choice between them.

If Devil’s Pool is the reason you are coming, the calendar decides your trip rather than the other way round. It opens roughly September to December, which is also when the main curtain is at its thinnest.

Which creates a real trade-off. A Victoria Falls helicopter ride in September shows you a good deal of bare basalt and a lot of structure, and the pool is open. The same Victoria Falls helicopter ride in April shows you the full 1,700 metres and the pool is firmly shut. September is where the two seasons overlap, and it is the month to aim for if you want both.

Four things to check before booking the pool

All of them are on the listing, and all of them get missed

A Victoria Falls helicopter ride is straightforward. The pool is the part with conditions.

  • The month

Low water only. A booking in March will not run, whatever the calendar on the site says.

  • The minimum age

It varies by operator and it is stricter than the Victoria Falls helicopter ride itself.

  • Whether you can swim

This is moving water on the lip of a waterfall, with guides holding you. It is not a paddle.

  • What happens if it closes

Ask what is refunded if the river is too high on the day. Operators handle this differently.
