The name

Flight of Angels, Victoria Falls: what the name means and which flights fly it

Almost every operator at Victoria Falls sells something called the Flight of Angels, and people book it assuming it is one particular company’s product. It is not. It is a phrase borrowed from a line written in 1855, and today it is the standard name for the short circuit over the curtain — from $173.

The 1,700-metre curtain of Victoria Falls from the air

Quick answer

The Flight of Angels is the twelve-minute helicopter circuit over Victoria Falls, sold under that name by several operators on both sides of the river. The phrase comes from David Livingstone, who wrote in 1855 that scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight. It is a marketing name, not a company — so compare the fares and the transfers rather than the wording.

Where the name came from

One sentence, written in 1855, that operators have used ever since

A line from Livingstone’s journals, borrowed by everyone who flies here.

David Livingstone reached the falls in November 1855 and named them after his queen. The line everyone quotes came later, in his journals: that scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.

A century later, when sightseeing aircraft started operating over the gorge, that phrase was the obvious thing to call the trip. It has been the name of the short circuit ever since — first by fixed-wing aircraft, then by helicopter.

Which matters for one practical reason. Because it is a phrase rather than a brand, several different operators sell a Flight of Angels, and the flights are not identical. They differ on minutes, on whether the transfer is included, and on which side of the river they lift off from. Compare those three things, not the name.

What the twelve minutes actually covers

Five things, in the order you see them

The route is close to identical whichever operator you fly with.

  • The Zambezi above the lip

Wide, flat and silent. Nothing about it suggests what is a few hundred metres downstream.

  • The full curtain

All 1,700 metres, in one frame. This is the thing no viewpoint on foot can give you.

  • The first gorge

Where the water lands — a slot barely wider than a street, running across the river rather than away from it.

  • The bridge

The 1905 span between Zimbabwe and Zambia, across the second gorge.

  • The second circuit

Flown the other way round, so whoever was on the inside gets the window view. Ask which direction goes first if you care about the light.

Which one to book

The name is the same. The fares are not.

Same name, three fares, and the transfer decides it.

$173 — the plain twelve minutes. Rated 4.6 from 68 reviews. Everything you came for, nothing else. Check whether the transfer to the helipad is included before you compare it with anything.

$180 — twelve to twenty-five minutes with hotel pickup. Rated 4.8 from 603 reviews, which is more than every other listing on this page put together. For $7 more than the cheapest it removes two taxi rides. This is the one we would book.

$205 — from Livingstone, in Zambia. Rated 4.8 from 66. Same falls, different country. Worth it only if you are already sleeping on that side.

It is a phrase from 1855, not a company. Compare minutes and transfers, not wording.

What each one costs

Common questions

The Flight of Angels, answered

What is the Flight of Angels at Victoria Falls?

The short helicopter circuit over the falls, twelve to fifteen minutes, sold under that name by several operators. From $173.

Where does the name come from?

From David Livingstone, who wrote in 1855 that scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight. Operators borrowed the phrase for the sightseeing circuit.

Is the Flight of Angels one company?

No. It is a descriptive name, and several operators on both sides of the river sell a flight under it. The fares, the minutes and the transfers differ.

Is the Victoria Falls helicopter ride a helicopter or a plane?

Today it is a helicopter on every listing here. The name predates helicopters and was first used for fixed-wing sightseeing flights over the gorge.

How long is the Flight of Angels?

Twelve to fifteen minutes of flying, which is two circuits over the curtain in opposite directions. Door to door, allow about an hour.

Is a twelve-minute Victoria Falls helicopter ride long enough?

For the falls themselves, yes — the curtain is one object and you see it whole on the first pass. If you also want the Batoka Gorge and the river above, that is the twenty-two minute flight at $271.

What the phrase does and does not tell you

A name that describes the route, not the company

The name tells you the route. It does not tell you the fare.

Because the Flight of Angels is a description rather than a brand, two listings with the same name can differ by ten minutes and by whether a car collects you. That is the whole practical content of the phrase: it means a short Victoria Falls helicopter ride over the curtain, and nothing more.

So compare the three things the name does not cover. How many minutes. Whether the transfer is in the fare. Which side of the river it lifts off from. A Victoria Falls helicopter ride sold under a poetic name is still just a flight with a schedule.

Four things the short circuit always includes

Whatever the operator calls it

These are common to every listing sold under the name.

  • Two circuits over the curtain

One each way, so the inside row gets the window on the second pass.

  • The first gorge

Where the water lands. On any Victoria Falls helicopter ride this is the frame that explains the geology.

  • A headset with commentary

The pilot talks you through it, and you can hear everything.

  • Doors on

No listing here flies doors off. You shoot through glass, which is why the window seat matters.
